I will try my best to keep this list of countries that require travel insurance to be constantly updated; however, please exercise due diligence as well to confirm any changes in entry requirements as they are changing quite a lot nowadays.

Your destination’s travel requirements are definitely one of the many concerns that you probably have whenever you are planning for an upcoming trip, and among such prerequisites, you are probably wondering if travel insurance is mandatory.

After all, a country’s reasons for requiring travel insurance might be because of a diplomatic concern (such as between the USA and Cuba), an immigration rule (like the Schengen Area’s visa conditions), or a medical regulation (especially in response to the recent COVID-19 pandemic).

…But at the very core, you should ALWAYS have travel insurance for your travels!

Nevertheless, I recognize the fact that sometimes, a country has a specific insurance requirement that must be met. So in order to help save you time and effort, I have compiled this list of countries that require travel insurance along with their distinct standards for entry.

Egypt

REASON FOR TRAVEL INSURANCE REQUIREMENT: In response to COVID-19
OTHER ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:

  • A valid Egypt Visa (depending on your nationality)
  • Completed “Public Health Card”
  • A printed medical certificate with a negative COVID-19 RT-PCR test result taken at most 72 hours before departure of last direct flight to Egypt. The certificate must be issued and stamped by an approved laboratory (oral or nasal swab)
  • Passengers arriving on direct flights at Hurghada (HRG), Marsa Alam (RMF), Sharm El Sheikh (SSH), or Taba (TCP) without a printed negative Coronavirus (COVID-19) PCR test result are subject to a PCR test on arrival at their own expense and must self-isolate until results are received

Jamaica

Launched in November 2020, Jamaica is one of the latest countries that require travel insurance in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and it is called their “Jamaica Cares” program — a mandatory travel insurance that costs $40 per person — however, it is still required to get a separate trip insurance that will work on top of their program.

  • A valid Jamaica Visa (depending on your nationality)

  • A valid Morocco Visa (depending on your nationality)
  • A negative COVID-19 PCR test is taken at most 72 hours before departure from the first embarkation point (result must be in Arabic, French or English) — this does not apply to those younger than 11 years old
  • Complete a passenger health form online, print and sign it to present upon departure
  • Download the tracking app ‘Wiqaytna’

  • A valid certificate of a negative PCR test result for COVID-19 that is less than 72 hours old at the time of departure (if you don’t have this, you’ll have to take an antigen test on arrival at your own cost, and in the event that you test positive for COVID-19, you must quarantine yourself at your own cost) — this does not apply to passengers younger than 5 years old

Asia Countries tha Require Travel Insurance

Cambodia

Currently, Cambodia is one of the Southeast Asian countries that require travel insurance and it is mandatory that you purchase from their local health insurance policy that issued by Forte. This plan costs $90 and can be obtained from here: [click] — this insurance plan is valid for 10 days.

  • A valid Cambodia Visa (depending on your nationality)
  • A deposit of $2,000 upon arrival for a mandatory COVID-19 swab test and potential treatment services (even burial)
  • A printed medical certificate with a negative COVID-19 PCR test issued at most 72 hours before departure from the first embarkation point

Iran

Iran’s requirement for travel insurance is not widely publicized but if you are applying through an Iranian Embassy you would have known how this is mandatory as it is part of the documents needed. But those who usually only get an e-visa or visa on arrival to Iran are surprised by this requirement, and a lot of them have to go through the trouble of buying it at the airport.

  • A valid Iran Visa (depending on your nationality)
  • A valid health certificate in English of a negative COVID-19 molecular test result that has been taken within 96 hours of entry (does not apply to passengers younger than 8 years old)
  • A completed “Self-Declaration Form” to be given to the airline before arrival
  • A completed “Passenger Commitment Letter” must be presented upon arrival at immigration

  • A valid Jordan Visa (depending on your nationality)
  • A negative COVID-19 PCR test result issued at most 72 hours before departure from the first embarkation point
    • Test result for passengers arriving from Egypt, Iraq, Palestinian Territory, or Turkey must be issued by an approved laboratory (details here)
  • A completed travel declaration form and “Locator Form” — the confirmation code received via email must be shown at the airport check-in counter for departure

One of the United Arab Emirates standard rules of entry is to provide a travel insurance especially if you’re arriving at Dubai (DXB) and Sharjah (SHJ).

  • A valid UAE Visa (depending on your nationality)
  • Download and register the COVID-19 DXB Smart App (passengers arriving at Sharjah (SHJ) must download the ALHOSN App)
  • A printed negative COVID-19 PCR test result that has been taken at most 72 hours before departure from the first embarkation point (result must be in Arabic or English and must be issued by an approved laboratory listed here: [click] or by a laboratory accredited by the departure country)
  • Nationals of South Korea traveling under the Fast Track program must have an ‘Isolation Exemption Certificate’

For a long time now, Russia is one of the countries that require travel insurance to be submitted by tourists as part of its visa application. They did not state minimum coverage specifics but as long as your travel insurance provider covers Russia, it will be accepted.

  • A valid Russia Visa (depending on your nationality)

Ukraine

Ukraine is one of those countries that require travel insurance for a long time now. To date, the insurance you buy must come from one of the following:
– A company registered in Ukraine
– A foreign insurance company that has a representative office in Ukraine
– A foreign insurance company that is in treaty relations with an insurance company partner in Ukraine

Anguilla

  • A completed “Application for Entry” before departure and then present the “Electronic Travel Authorization Certificate” upon arrival

Aruba

This is one of the countries that require travel insurance after the rise of the COVID-19 pandemic. For this, it’s mandatory to get the plan from the country’s Aruba Visitors Insurance website (any other medical coverage purchased from another company cannot be substituted for this).

OTHER ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:

  • A valid Aruba Visa (depending on your nationality)
  • A completed Health Assessment form (travel authorization must be presented at time of check-in)
  • A negative COVID-19 molecular test based on a nasal swab taken at most 72 hours before departure (tests accepted are: HDA, NAAT, NEAR, RT-LAMP, RT-PCR and TMA)
    • Tests must be presented upon arrival or uploaded at most 12 hours before departure.

Bahamas

All visitors to the Bahamas are required to fill out a Travel Health Visa application with a QR code for entry in which the cost for the mandatory insurance is already included in the price. The coverage of this insurance plan might not be as comprehensive for your liking so you can purchase additional travel insurance from a company like SafetyWing to act as a supplement to your Bahamas travel insurance.

Costa Rica

This is one of the countries that require travel insurance after the rise of the COVID-19 pandemic. To date, they require tourists to get an insurance plan that satisfies at least 3 conditions:
– Indicates your name
– Effective policy in Costa Rica
– Guarantee of coverage (at least USD $50,000) for medical expenses in case you contract COVID-19 in Costa Rica
– Minimum coverage of USD $2,000 for extended lodging expenses due to quarantine — or you can also just purchase a local insurance offered by one of the authorized local insurance providers: Grupo INS, Sagicor, or BlueCross BlueShield

REASON FOR TRAVEL INSURANCE REQUIREMENT: In response to COVID-19
OTHER ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:

  • A valid Costa Rica Visa (depending on your nationality)
  • A “Pase de Salud” form must be completed before the departure of the flight to Costa Rica (this will generate a QR code which must be presented upon arrival)
  • Passengers must arrive at San Jose (SJO) or Liberia (LIR)

Cuba

For a while now, Cuba is one of the countries that require travel insurance upon entry. Take note, however, that Cuba does not consider USA medical insurance as valid so you should find a non-USA company (e.g. Atlas Travel Insurance). As for the minimum coverage, Cuba did not set a requirement; it’s only important that someone has one.

There are no specific coverage value requirements for the travel insurance — what’s important is that you have one (if you only have a layover in Sint Maarten, travel insurance is not required).
