Travel Essential: Scrubba Wash Bag, A Carry-On “Washing Machine”

by Products & Services46 comments

Surely, a washing machine never made it into anyone’s packing list, no matter how essential it can be on long trips that span for at least a week. This is why some travelers would just overpack (uh-oh) or if not, once there is ever a need to do the laundry, 3 choices would often come to mind: pay for a laundry service, hand wash the clothes in a questionable sink, or reuse the dirty clothes (yikes). (Scrubba Wash Bag)

Most of the time, these 3 options are not so ideal — expensive, tiring, icky — so is there a better choice? Thankfully, an Aussie guy invented the world’s first-ever portable “washing machine” that can wash your clothes in just under 30 seconds! Introducing… the Scrubba Wash Bag [link]!

About Scrubba Wash Bag

Travel Essential

Weighing less than 5 oz. (or 145 grams), the Scrubba™ Wash Bag is the world’s lightest and most compact “washing machine” (when rolled for storage, it can be at around 6 x 2 inches only). To be more precise, it’s like a portable washboard but unlike the traditional washboards that we have, this won’t take up so much space in your carry-on luggage or backpack.

With these in mind, you can absolutely do your laundry anywhere and anytime — there’s no need for electricity and it only requires a small amount of water.

How Does it Work?

Scrubba Nodules

Like I’ve mentioned, the Scrubba Wash Bag functions like a washboard but with a modern twist! With its internal Scrubba™ nodules, it efficiently cleans your clothes in a jiffy and the wash always ends up like ‘washing machine quality’!

To use, you just need to follow these simple steps:

  1. FILL the Scrubba Wash Bag with water (2-3 liters), cleaning liquid, and clothes (1-6 items)  — TIP: Better to use liquid detergent since if you use powder, it will take a while to melt
  2. ROLL down the top for at least 4 and up to times and CLIP the ends (like you would with a dry bag)
  3. DEFLATE the bag. You can open and squeeze the valve to expel air
  4. RUB the clothes by pressing down against the Scrubba Wash Bag. Its unique internal flexible washboard will work its magic on your clothes as you this! (There are grip circles on the outside of the bag too that would prevent the bag from sliding while you’re rubbing it). Do this for 30 seconds for a quick wash, or for 3 minutes for a machine quality wash. (For your delicates, press and rub gently)
  5. RINSE. Unclip and unroll the Scrubba Wash Bag and then pour out the water. Rinse clothes by simply filling them up with water and then shaking it.
  6. DRY clothes! It’s that easy!

You can also watch the video below to see how it works:

Reasons to Use Scrubba?

A LOT. To name a few:

  • Wash clothes FASTER. As mentioned, you can do a quick wash for only 30 seconds, or if you want a machine-quality wash, you can do it in just under 3-5 minutes.
  • Wash CLEANER. Say goodbye to dirty or questionable hostel sinks and tubs!
  • LESS expensive. As compared to when you pay for a laundry service in your hotel for example.
  • LESS harsh. Unlike a washing machine, this won’t be too harsh on your clothes, all the while without sacrificing the cleaning quality
  • NO risk. Compared to when you pay someone to do your laundry, using a Scrubba Wash Bag gives you the assurance that you won’t suddenly be missing a few clothes and that they won’t come back to you in another size or color! (I’ve had several bad experiences in Asia whenever I use a paid service. -sigh-)
  • NO pain as compared to handwashing which often leaves me with coarse skin and red knuckles.
  • TWICE as effective as when you hand wash your clothes!
  • PEACE of mind. No matter if you’re just packing a small carry-on or a month’s worth of clothes, you got it covered!
  • Has TONS of uses. You can use it as a dry bag, or later on use it for your delicates at home, or for when you’re out camping, hiking, backpacking, back to the dorms, etc.
  • Use of LESS water. Each load on a Scrubba Wash Bag can only be about 2-6 liters! So as a traveler, you’re helping in conserving more water.

What an awesome gadget – I never heard of the Scrubba Wash Bag before but now I literally can’t wait to buy one. I need this portable “washing machine” in my luggage next time I travel – it would allow me to pack less outfits and rewash them in my hotel. Fantastic product, thanks for sharing it with us!

Wow. This actually looks pretty wicked. I use a material bag to put all my dirty washing. Just so much better to keep it separate.

Hotel laundry fees can cost a fortune. I believe I’ve only used it once or twice in all my travels. This bag seems to be the perfect travel accessory.

For sure! I tried doing laundry via a hotel service and it was just too pricey. I also tried doing laundry via a cheap local laundromat but most of the time, they either loose some of my clothes or they end up damaging some :/ So for sure, with Scrubba, I’ll have more security!
